My wife has been a Monitronics customer for almost 20 years. I married her 2 years ago and we decided that we no longer wanted their service.

The process of cancelling the service was incredibly difficult and unethical. We first had to go through a several trial and error processes of going through a long sequence of automated phone selections. They do not provide a cancellation of service selection. After finally getting to speak to somebody from the cancellation department, the representative required us to provide sufficient justification to him as to why we were cancelling the service.

The conversation must have lasted for 15-20 minutes. It was not sufficient to simply say that we no longer wanted their service. We proceeded to tell them that we no longer used the service in the extensive manner that my wife once did and that the cost did not justify the level of use that we presently had. The representative then twisted that into saying "So the security of your family is not worth the cost" or something like that.

He then said he would give us 2 free months of service if cost was the only concern. We declined. He said something like "So do you feel fine with neglecting the safety of your family and loved ones. I am offering you are service for free for 2 months." He continued to iterate these attempts at inducing guilt.

This type of back-and-forth went on and on. I said "I have a right to simply cancel my service and it is absolutely no concern of yours as to why I am doing it" and he continued with the guilt stuff. Finally, I just sarcastically said "I am just a terrible person" and he moved on with the letter-writing process that they require. But the service won't be cancelled for 30 days after they have evaluated and processed the letter.

This will allow them to continue to charge us more money. I said "Why don't you give me the free two months so I don't have to pay for what will amount to another two months of payments" and he said that I had declined that offer. So, my word meant something then but never meant anything while I was trying to simply cancel a service that I pay for. It is like living under a Communist government.

You don't want to not make the payments because it hurts your credit rating. This is a truly disgusting company.

Reason of review: Monitronics plays God in the cancellation process and costs 2 more months of service..

Monetary Loss: $65.

Monitronics Cons: Deplorable customer treatment.

Location: Braselton, Georgia

Just stop paying these crooks. I stopped automatic deductions from my bank account.

Fought them for six months. I did not back down. They eventually gave up and released me from their poorly written contract. Your wife signed a contract with her installer, not Monitronics.

Monitronics is merely a bill collector and has no legal right to enforce the contract because they never signed the contract with your wife.

Stop paying them. They cannot do anything to you or your wife.
